Alcohol, a drug for the masses

“There is no safe level of drinking, according to the WHO. And not drinking alcohol is the only way to avoid its damaging effects.”

Alcohol (الكحول) is an Arabic word, but it is a distortion of the ancient Arabic word ghoul (غول).
Ghoul (Ghawl) means that which is harmful. Hence, it was also used for a mythical monster in Arabia.
Both words, alcohol and ghoul, found their way into the English language.
The Quran when describing the drink of the people of Paradise says:

“No bad effect is there in it (no Ghawl in it), nor from it will they be intoxicated” Quran 37:47

As far as I am aware, drinking intoxicants or anything unhealthy is clearly not the way in Islam and in Buddhism. Hence, when you find a Muslim or a Buddhist drinking alcohol, they are clearly not following a healthy lifestyle and not following that which they were taught.
As to drinking in the Bible, it is even attributed to Prophets, which is clearly a fabrication. However, the Bible still contains texts that may help in keeping away from intoxicants:

“It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.” Proverbs 31:4-7

As drinking alcohol is very addictive, one may require some serious help from professionals to ‘kick the habit’.
