The birth of an extraordinary Palestinian

Even with the Quran, whose words are not disputed with regards to its authenticity, one has to be careful when searching its meanings.

As to the collections on the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon, you will be presented with two challenges. Namely, whether they are authentically sound and what is their meaning.

Now, imagine you want to search the birth of Issa (Jesus), peace be upon him. from other than the Quran; you will be challenged to establish his very existence, let alone his miraculous birth.

For the Romans and Greeks, it seems he was of no significance, as the current scholarship cannot find references to Issa (Jesus) among the Greek and Roman histories.

Greek and Roman histories did not record everyone who lived in their time. Hence the absence of his mention in those histories is not evidence of his non-existence.

The Bible mentions Issa (Jesus) in many contradictory terms. Moreover, it was written after he departed. The many deletions and insertions the Bible went through explains its contradictions.

Hence, reaching the authentic Issa (Jesus) through the Bible remains a challenge. Again, those contradictions are not evidence of his non-existence.

Even the famous Socrates, who was poisoned by the authorities of his time; we have only two references for him, and they contradict each other.

As to Jewish histories, they very rarely mention the name Issa (Jesus), peace be upon him. There are no surprises there, for they were masters of deletion and insertion. The writers of the Bible were Jews. Even Paul (Saul) was a Jew.

It should not be construed from this statement that all Jews are evil or untruthful. For some will write the truth while others will delete it or mix it with falsehood. Indeed, the Encyclopaedia Judaica states the following:

“Beginning with the Basle edition of the Talmud (1578–80), those passages in which Jesus was mentioned, as well as other statements alluding to Christianity, were deleted from most editions of the Babylonian Talmud by the Christian censors or even by internal Jewish censorship. These deletions were later collected in special compilations and in manuscripts (cf. R.N.N. Rabbinowicz, Ma’amar al Hadpasat ha-Talmud (1952), 28n.26). From the stories about Jesus in the Babylonian Talmud, it is evident that he was regarded as a rabbinical student who had strayed into evil ways: “May we produce no son or pupil who disgraces himself like Jesus the Nazarene” (Ber. 17b; Sanh. 103a; cf. Dik. Sof. ad loc.). The rabbis were not certain of his time or his activities. Thus he is described as a pupil of *Joshua b. Peraḥyah (Sanh. 107b; see Dik. Sof. ad loc.).”

It is clear the Talmud went through many modifications to reach its current form and therefore its content can be challenging when searching for facts. But, surprisingly, Issa (Jesus) peace be upon him is still there after all that concerted effort into deleting his name.

From the Quran, we know he was preaching exclusively to the Jews and that he had a hard time gaining a small following. And from the Quran we know that this happened with all the Prophets.

Now for certainty, we know from the Quran that Mariam (Mary) lived in isolation and only Zachariah, a Prophet, and her adoptive father, had access to her room and who would check on her every now and then. Mariam was holy. She was receiving food not found in town and not brought in by the people of the town. When Zachariah, peace be upon him, enquired, she replied: “It was from Allah!”.

There Zachariah made a call to have a son who will inherit him. His call was answered. It is worth noting that Zachariah and his son Yahya (Joseph), peace be upon them, were murdered according to some historians.

As to Mariam, who was not married; she went on to give birth to a child, Issa the messiah. She was accused of adultery. The temple elders of the day had all the power to stone her, but something much stronger stood against them. And so, they lost the fight till the end of times. The bible is silent here. Science is not yet at a level to explain those events.

So here is an excerpt from the Quran:

“And mention, in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.”

He said, “I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.”

She said, “How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?”

He said, “Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.’ ”

So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, “Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten.”

But he called her from below her, “Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.

And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, ‘Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.’ ”

Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented. O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste.”

So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?”

[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive

And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.

And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.”

That is Jesus, the son of Mary – the word of truth about which they are in dispute.

It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is. ”
